Celebrate the Citrus Sisters
August is National Lemonade Month. You know the feeling. Summer heat. Quenching thirst. Memories of childhood lemonade stands at the curb. The lemon gets a lot of attention. But what about it’s citrus sister, the small, festive green, “let’s party” lime?
While often used simply to accent flavors as a wedge in a cold drink or squeezed across a dish for some zip, the lime can also be the star of a recipe or a refreshing, healthy, hydrating drink.
Take Key Lime Pie. Sweet and tart. It puts you on island time with your toes in the water. Abby at Stem and Spoon has created a delicious Keto Key Lime Pie that is Vegan and Gluten-Free with a toasted almond flour crust. Quite the refreshing summer dessert!
How about a refreshing, healthy limeade to stay hydrated in the heat? It will add variety to your day and boost your Vitamin C.
A single lime is a great source of Vitamin C (up to 32% of the daily requirement), delivers a host of minerals (especially potassium to aid hydration), and has fewer than 12 calories and less than 4 grams of carbohydrates. The antioxidants in the citrus sisters bring numerous health benefits along with their refreshing flavor. In short, they are just plain good for us.
Limeade is simple to make:
Squeeze the juice of one lime into 8 ounces of water. Add 18 drops (1 teaspoon) of llinea monk fruit. If you prefer your citrus sweeter than tart, add another 6-12 drops. Add ice, maybe a couple of mint leaves, and enjoy. Some people like to jazz up their drinks with sparkle and fizz. If that’s your style, use your favorite unsweetened carbonated water.
Now, since it is National Lemonade Month, we would be remiss to not celebrate with a few lemon drink and dessert recipes:
lemonade
Arnold palmer
lemon bars
Whether it’s lemons or limes, celebrate the citrus sisters’ support of our health. They just need a little llinea monk fruit sweetness to balance their tartness.
Enjoy these final weeks of Summer.
